5 Things Every Parent Should Know About Choosing a Dance Studio

If most studios have qualified, friendly teachers and a show at the end of the year, does it matter where you choose to enroll? Yes! Here are the 5 things every parent should consider before choosing a dance studio for their child.

1. What is the studio mission?
It’s important to consider the mission and values of the studio and the intended outcome for the students. Some studios are very traditional and spend most of the class time working on one or two dances to perform at the end of the year, while other studios are focused mainly on competitions, creating a win/lose atmosphere.

At Santa Cruz Dance Company our mission is to develop our students to be self-expressed individuals in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. Among our highest values are a spirit of community, vitality and a healthy fit body. Students learn the technique of dance as well as a variety of inspiring choreography. Each class is both educational and celebrational, providing students with the appreciation and skills to enjoy dance for a lifetime.

2. What are the facilities like?
The condition of the studio facility can greatly affect the mood of the students, teachers and staff. Is it run down, unkempt or drab? Is there adequate parking? At Santa Cruz Dance Company, no expense has been spared in creating what is said to be “the most beautiful studio in Santa Cruz County”. From our state-of-the-art sound system and beautiful lighting, to our sprung red oak floor. Our studios are spacious with observation windows for parents to observe classes while allowing students to stay focused during their lessons. Parents may also relax in our comfortable lobby, walk to local cafés or drive to nearby shopping (Nob Hill, Safeway, Trader Joes, Capitola Mall).

3. Do students have the opportunity to perform?
Most studios have one very long recital at the end of the year. Parents and friends must sit through scores of dance routines before ever getting a glance at their child. Santa Cruz Dance Company provides the opportunity to perform several times throughout the year (recitals, parades, festivals) because we believe the experience of performing is invaluable in the development of the student. In preparation for any performance, students are called to be responsible and accountable team players, and fully express themselves with confidence.

Santa Cruz Dance Company showcases are fun and highly entertaining! Each student will have the empowering experience of being part of a professional production in the presence of other talented and passionate dancers. We have three resident dance companies at Santa Cruz Dance Company, making our recitals an unforgettable experience.

4. Are classes exclusively for kids and teens?
Santa Cruz Dance Company is a great place for adults to dance and be fit! If you’ve never taken a cardio dance class but dream of trying, or you used to dance but well… it’s been too long, our “Cardio Funk” classes are designed with you in mind. Our instructors’ ability to break down the steps allows even the novice dancer to follow along and build confidence and skill.

At Santa Cruz Dance Company we offer dance classes for all ages from pre-school through adult. Classes are co-ed with the exception of our all boys hip-hop and boys dance team.

5. Can I get immediate assistance and customer service?
In many studios the teacher or studio owner conducts class and does the administration. By trying to do two jobs at once, the class may suffer, as the teacher has to use class time for customer service issues.

Santa Cruz Dance Company has front desk staff on hand during all regular class times, so you can get immediate assistance.
